FUTURE NEWS WORLDWIDE: JOURNALISM CONFERENCE AS A MEDIUM FOR CULTURAL EXCHANGE

Future News Worldwide 2017 is much more than just a conference and workshop for 100 young journalist from 45 country, in Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh, Scotland, from 6-7 July 2017.

Aside from the chance to explicate our voices for the voiceless people in the conference panel, and workshops from more than 20 journalists, editors, and executives from outstanding range of media organisations, it’s also a medium for cultural exchange.

I still can not forgot the sweet and sour taste of rose lemonade beverage on the first day lunch of the event, when Xiaoyu Gu the China Representatives came to me and describe the culture of journalism in China.

Xiaoyu name is a chinese language stands for rainy days. For me, her experiences as a journalist in China is as hard as walking in a storm rainy days barely without umbrella. It is struggle for their lives to do the coverage in specific contents.

That is why Xiaoyu eyes covered with tears when she have a chance to having a conversation with Charles Lewis, one of the workshop speakers that the founder of two Pullitzer Prize-winning non profit news organisations and also named as ‘one of the most noteable investigative reporters in the US since World War I‘.

It is because she want to be a journalist like him, that have have a freedom as a press to telling people the truth of the whole story through the every aspect of the news.

Indonesia may have passed the difficulties due to press freedom in our past second president regime, or maybe some journalist in certain area still have to face the same problems. We may also have to face a new problems such as fake news and subjectivity in broadcast media because of the ownership of certain political leaders.

But as an Indonesian representatives in Future News Worldwide, by meeting another 99 young journalists from across the globe made me learn things and widen my perspectives : there are journalists in a few country still have to facing the challenges by use their voice. Such as, Afghanistan, Egypt, and Pakistan.

Whatever the challenges facing journalist in Indonesia right now, as a young Indonesian journalist for a moment I want to be grateful for the privilleges that we had now in our country.

Indonesia had Alliance of Independent Journalist and another few non profit organisation to protect the freedom of Indonesian press, online media, start-up media company, and many others institutions that help to improve the work of journalism and press freedom in Indonesia.

Indonesia may facing a lot of challenges in journalism, and it is the responsibilities of young journalist like my self to start solving it. Because, the reality of this world that we have to face is that everything come with positive and negative side. And our job is also including to starts being positive within ourselves, and spread it to our community.

I am not only experiencing cultural of journalism in every country that participating through Future News Worldwide 2017, but also for exchanging the arts and cultural heritage of my country and all of them too.

I made friends with Maria Victoria from Venezuela, Omar Awwad from Egypt, and Ayman Ibrahim from Sudan, because they starting up the conversation with me by telling my blue shirts that I wear on the first day of the conference is interesting.

‘‘Is it Indonesian batik that you wear, right?“ ask Ayman as the only person that recognize the named of the shirts I wear, because he already went to Bali, Indonesia once.

For Maria and Omar that did not know about it, I told them that it is Indonesian Batik. An UNESCO world heritage from techniques, symbolism and culture surrounding hand-dyed cotton fabrics.

I also brought the souvenirs, so all the delegates across the world can feel a bit of Indonesian taste. It is Jenang, a sweet toffee-like sugar palm based confection and sticky rice, with durian flavour. Durian is a big fruit with a hard shell and sharp thorns which well known by the strong smell, and easily found in Indonesia.

It feels so great when Rabab from Sudan, and Andres from Spain really like the taste of it. I also found it so funny when Pawel from Poland and Kristian from Northern Ireland got annoyed by the smells of the durian.

Things goes much fun when Lavanya, Ayush, and Manish from India taught me the root of Mahabharata is originally an epic tale from their country to describe philosophical side of Kurukṣetra War and the fates of the Kaurava and the Pāṇḍava Princes.

Because in Indonesia, we have our version of Mahabharata too, and the Indian serial television is become number one hits back on 2014 in our country.

I just can not forget how Maria Victoria from Venezuela and I are having the continous great conversation about beauty pageant. It is because Indonesia still struglling to win the Miss Universe title when we re-join the competition on 2004 until now, and Venezuela already having a 7 title of it since 1979.

Maria told me that beauty pageant is already become the culture in Venezuela, and almost everyone in her country kind of feel the excitement like the the culture of football in United Kingdom.

The last but not least, I also find a soulmate for having the same interesting type of music with Simon O’Leary from Ireland. I found it really hard to have a deep discussion with people in Indonesia about United Kingdom pop culture and girl band such as Spice Girls, Girls Aloud, and The Saturdays. Both of us does have an amazing conversation about it.

It is quite interesting how Future News Worldwide 2017 not only an event for young journalist to learn the skills from some of the finest exponents of the profession, but also as a medium for cultural exchange from 49 country all across the globe.
