Indonesian Male Fashion Leaders Speak Up :

Breaking The Boundaries of People's  Perspective

For Ray Farid Oldyveira, there are no changes in his recent hectic life as in previous days of organizing a fashion brand under his name and being a fashion blogger. He had to controlling the quality of every item, manage the customer order on messenger applications, and shipping order to the cargo by his self. At the mean time, this hardworking man also has to arrange every article for his website. He had to runs everything from his hometown, Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi.

The journey begins when Ray being the head of his high school wall magazine press department, and for that duty he got inspirations from an Italian fashion blogger Chiara Ferragni personal website. Later on 2012, Ray started his own fashion blog and continuing to achieve many things.

As well as being the outfit of the day photo contest winner held by one of the biggest fashion magazines in Indonesia, and advanced to the top twenty of prestigious Indonesian male pageant out of 986 participants. On March 2015 Ray launched her own fashion brand named ReiacWear after he got his law degree. Ray doesn’t really care about how people think about him, as long as he achieved his dreams in a certain good way.

“When I went to campus wearing a tote bag, my friend would said that I look like a housewife who wants to buy groceries in the traditional market. I think, people have free will to voice out their perspective, and it depends on us to consider that as a motivation or an insult,” Ray Said.

Not only considered as being Indonesia’s central economy, Jakarta as the capital city of the country also noteable as the hotbed for fashion industry. With hundreds of local designer showcasing their masterpiece every year in dozens fashion week, and growing number of fashion labels taking oportunities promoting their product on social media especially instagram or in pop up bazaars. Located on Java Island, more than two thousand kilometers away from Sulawesi Island, things are not much different.

Sandra Adi, a public relation student who achieved many things from the glamorous fashion world, doesn’t have full support from his family for doing things that he love. Making his mark as a freelance fashion stylist and taking part on Indonesia Fashion Islamic Fair, also on Indonesia Fashion Week held in Jakarta back on 2014 as media center officer is simply not enough.

“My sister once said that, doing things related to fashion in fact is not something that will be done by a man.”

Luckily for Andreas Wen, his family who made him the person that he is now. At the young age, he has been accustomed to seeing his grandfather use a sewing machine, because bread and butter of his family come from convection industry. As the days gone by, fabrics and it measurer also being common things for him. He have graduated from one of the reputable fashion design institute in Jakarta, and released his first collection on 2014 named Soccer Vector to a trunk show. A year later, Andre reach his biggest achievement by winning a fashion design competition on Indonesia Fashion Week 2015 as a favorite design named Allegra. At the same event, he is also colaborate with some alumni from his almamater for a runway collection name Awterspace.

“In terms of how to wear the item, I think 70% men in Indonesia doesn’t have a good knowledge about fashion. I don’t say that they have a bad taste or not have enough guts, it is just hard to conform the world trend with occasions in our culture. As long as they don’t wear a skirt it is fine for me,” Andre also added that everyone had the equal rights to achieved such things, if things that they do can be justified.

Back in the event of Batik Woven Fashion and Craft Expo 2015 that held by Central Java Ministry of Industry and Trade, Amin Fahrudin, founder of Association Jepara Troso Woven, Textil and Convection looks untiring provides information to the visitor about culture value behind Jepara Troso Woven—traditional fabrics from Jepara—his place of residence. He said, “fashion industry is not only a bread and butter for me, it is also a chance to maintain the continuity of Jepara’s culture.”

One of the core values of humanity that have been forgotten lately, is that how important to understand why people act the way they do. Not only in Indonesia but in every places around the world, people should do the things that they love in the absence of coercion. As long as they can be held accountable for what they have been done and excel.

The owner of the most famous fashion blog for men in Italy named TheGreenPapillon.com and also has featured on Graffio Magazine Italy, he is Jacopo Neri.

Don't ever, EVER, judge him by his boldness style or his expertise on fashion world. In few aspects, his looks and appearance is so different with his personality. Moreover, when you read his opinion which is so expert about fashion and look up to his style, do you ever think that he is a Pharmacy Student at The University of Florence, Italy, and also loved to play Tennis?

This is the journey to Jacopo Neri's real life!

You are a pharmacy students. So, why you have an interest on fashion?
Because, as I most of the time answer, I suffer a bit of an inner duality who will always bring me thinking on which will be my future. Actually I have a very artistic vein and, maybe, the blog it’s just and instrument to satisfy my thirst of creativity. At the opposite my personality is also composed by a rational part, the pleasure I have on studying the “why of things” by conjecturing on them, which really fascinates me even if it force me to be someone else, no the real me. I know it’s all a bit abstract but I can’t explain it different.

When did you start blogging, and why?
I started when I opened the blog. I love to share my passions as well as my thoughts. You know, it’s a sort of a “secret” diary ( which is not SO secret :D ) to fill in day by day, or in my case, week by week. Blogging it’s something like you will always have someone who will catch your feelings through a text you share, although it’s just reading words. It’s like knowing that you will have someone who agree or critics your work that, in the end, is like having someone who will listen to what you are about to tell. It’s great.

Your website named "Green Papillon" what does it means?
No hidden meanings. It’s just a funny way to describe me by referring to a specific physical feature, as my green colored eyes, and to make the point on what we’re talking about on this blog by using a word which best represent the male elegance.

Who's take those mesmerizing picture and video on your blog?
First of all, I hope not to be “mesmerizing" as the Bufotenine does! which is an hallucinogenic tryptamine taken by the toad’s skin!! (Pharmacy thing baby!.) Well, I have a professional photographer, which first of all is a friend, and who is actually the one who does photos ad videos as well. He’s the right harm of the blog, and I guess the left one too. His name is Alex Apparente and you can easily find him by clicking around my website. Inside the Staff we also have an other “shady” figure, our great Web Designer Francesco Pacetti who is actually a skilled and professional freelance too. The TGP crew is essentially here.

So, is it your website "Green Papillon" is just your hobby?
As I already said the blog is a passion, a pure hobby. But once a person taught me to recognize and to keep alive all the parts of you by growing them, to just keep all the doors and interests open during your life. And so I do.

How you manage time between college and your fashion interest?
In the worst way. Really, it sucks. It’s so damn hard to find time to succeed on it. I wouldn’t be able without friends.

What kind of sports do you like, and why?
Well, I practice beach volley but only when it’s warm outside, no indoor matches. While during all the rest of the year I play Tennis and I swim too. When I’m not so overworked I can also find time for Gym. Anyway If I could I will spend my entire life on practicing sports and playing Word of Warcraft or BattleField4!!! yeahhh. (I’m a fffffing good sniper ;) )

Do you like any particular fashion brands, fashion blogger, and fashion designer?
    Fashion Brands & Designers: Valentino (When it was Valentino) (by Valentino Garavani); Armani (By GiorgioArmani); Phillip Lim; Thom Browne; Cavalli (for girls) ( by Roberto Cavalli ); Peter Pillotto and many others..
    Fashion bloggers (women): Chiara Ferragni.
    Fashion bloggers (men): What Ali Wore

Are you inspired and influenced by any of them?
From Chiara F. Yeah, I know she is a girl but she literally sweats class.

What is your signature style ?
For me Style is boldness, is a way-out from mediocracy.

Kindly inform us 7 songs which is describe your style !
    It’s A Man's Man's Man's World - James Brown
    Michael Jackson - Billie Jean
    Like I Love you - Justin Timberlake
    I heard it through the grapevine - Marvin Gaye
    Ain't No Sunshine - Bill Withers
    Kissing You - Des’ree
    Pete Doherty - For lovers

What is your opinion about Indonesia's fashion? Like our fashion people, fashion designer, fashion trends, and fashion markets?
I really have a small culture on Indonesia’s fashion world. The only one Designer’s name I know and I like is Priyo Octaviano. He is very eclectic and I like his women’s wear; especially the last collections: Galore and Black Paradise. Those clothes are so inspiring to me. Amazing. In order, I have to say that because of the very religious culture (as other factors as well) which is deeply rooted in this country and which rules lots of people’s clothing creativeness and ideas, designers still need to rise. In my opinion there are many shapes and color-combining ways we still have to learn from Indonesia.

What is your dream and your future plan?
I don’t have a real dream. I have many dreams and I hope to reach all of them a little.

When did you start blogging, and why ?
I was in the 10th grade, and since 2008 my appearance become my most attentions. It's all begin with I bought my own outfit. Teenager on my age usually did not buy shoes, shirts, or jeans by themselves, actually their parents bought for them. When I starts buy my own outfit, it makes me realized that i have a lot of interest on fashion world. Obviously, I'm not the kind of person that adore someone, and try to duplicate or combined his/her style in mine. Maybe, I often has a thoughts about someone with a cool style, and it's boost me to make a conversation with my self like "If he or she can, why don't I?". Then, I made my own blog on ebickp.blogspot.com and Lookbook account.

Is your interest on fashion world influencing your dreams and future ?
Definitely, yes. Since the third semester—I'm graduated now—I've been worked part time at a boutique and clothes store. But, I'm not satisfied with fee that provided by them, and the working time is not flexible. Finally, |I got a job as marketing in English First, the fee they provided is enough, and I could balancing the working time with my schedule. Working at EF, giving me an opportunity like meeting clients and new people, also from fashion industries. I have allocated my salary to buy some stuffs, definitely fashion stuffs. So, that is why I post a lot on my blog. I want to be a role model in fashion to anyone to look up to, instead doing nothing with bunch of my fashion stuffs. I also had a clothing line before, but I could not deal with my full schedule, so I decided to closed it up. I did work in some magazine like NYLON Indonesia and many more. Now, I work for ZARA in operational manager division. I want to work at fashion retail like ZARA, because I need some knowledge that can be applied, next in my future. Fashion and I is like a really close friend now and then, so I want to have a lot of knowledge and experience in this business.

Have you got some benefits from being a fashion blogger? Like money, or stuff?
Money, not yet. But I got a bunch of fashion stuff from giveaway, also voucher from fashion website like Blibli.com, chictopia, or anything. I often got an offer from my friends to wearing their brand clothes for my blog or anything.

Can you describe your own signature style?
Obviously, if someone ask me to define my personal style, it would be casual. But I don't know why, everyone, even my friends say that my style is so far from the casual word like the other man usually wear. I do love to wear jeans, shoes, and T-Shirts while hanging out. But some of friends tell me that jeans, shoes and T-Shirts that I wear is so different with people's style.

Could you give a style suggestions that young man should wear now?
We know, that there is a 3 style well known. There are casual, preppy, and edgy style. If any guy wants to look different with a good way, they should combine the three of that style with their own personal twist. It sounds great, and it will look great.

Please, named one Indonesia man celebrity, who you really like by their style.
It's gonna be Reuben Elishama Hadju.

If you have a chance to recreate an Indonesian celebrity fashion style, who is gonna be?
If I have that chance, I want to pick an Indonesian boyband. Majority, they always got a bad image. So, it's gonna be SM*SH.

Kindly inform us 3 movie which is had a fabulous wardrobe.
Alice character in Twilight Saga
Sex and The City
Zac Efron in The Paperboy

What is your dream and your future plan?
In the next couple years, i hope i will graduated from my undergraduate study, and soon be a brand manager on retail fashion store, maybe ZARA or TOPMAN. And also having my own clothing line again.
